Otoplasty

The word otoplasty refers to the surgical procedures used to correct deformities of the external ear. It is usually for people with protruding ears who try to get their ears closer to the head. The surgery provides definitive results making an incredible difference in their overall aspect.

The Procedure

The otoplasty will be realized in an operating room in a clinic, and will not necessarily require a night stay if it is performed under local anesthesia. The complete process lasts between two and four hours, in which the surgeon will perform a little incision on the upper part of the ear to expose the cartilage and be able to sculpt it and bend it back, so it can be in the desired place, some sutures may be added to the area to help maintain the new shape. In some occasions, it may be necessary to remove parts of the cartilage to get a more natural shape.

Recovery Process

Most of the patients who undergo this surgery, feel perfectly fine after a couple of hours after the procedure. Bandages are placed around the head as soon as the surgery is over; there might be some pain in the ears the first following days, but is easily relieved with medication. After a few days, the bandages are removed and one similar to a headband is placed instead.

Final Results

It may take a few weeks to see the final results, once the swelling is gone.
